Logic Bombs

Part 2 – 6: Terms and Definitions for Logic Bombs

TermDefinition
Logic BombMalware activated at a specific time or event

Logic bombs can be used when an attack needs to occur at a specific time or when a rule is in place to launch when something else happens. This type of attack can be used to help aid an attack, such as running additional malware on a system once an attack has started. This is commonly found in trojan malware or spyware as it is easier to implant logic bombs when an attack is not foreseeable or known. Other types of logic bombs can occur when employee or insider has access to a system and implants or schedules a logic bomb on the attackers behalf or if the employee has a motive. There are many configurations, rules, and options that go into planning a logic bomb that they are precisely planned out to attack and destroy itself with little presence or additional triggers which could be found by logs and historical data used by IT specialist.
